Amongst my favourite classical composers I include Czech Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884). One of his most renowned compositions is the symphonic poem VLTAVA (in Czech) or MOLDAU (in German) named after the Moldau River, the longest river in the Czech Republic at 430 km. As the Moldau River flows through Prague, it is crossed by 18 bridges, including the famous Charles bridge and it runs for a distance of 31km within the city itself. THE MOLDAU is one of six symphonic poems which form part of Smetana's symphonic work MA VLAST = MY HOMELAND. I am confident you will enjoy listening to this symphony in the annexed YouTube.
In his work Smetana composed a beautiful melody that imitates sounds of the large rivers of Bohemia. In the words of Mentana: «In this composition I hear the Vltava River flowing from two sources thereafter uniting into a single stream, then follows a path through forests and meadows, across landscapes where the wedding of a farmer is celebrated, nymphs of the night are dancing at dusk, on nearby rocks loom towering castles, majestic palaces and ruins. The Vltava swirls through rapids, widens and flows toward Prague, then disappears majestically into the distance, in order to meet the large river Elbe and continue flowing across Germany ".
